DISCOVERY BAY

About The Area

Discovery Bay (DB) is situated on the east coast of Lantau island in Hong Kong. Living in DB is a unique experience. The lifestyle is exceptional and far removed from the hectic buzz of Hong Kong Island or Kowloon. The first thing visitors notice is the lack of noise. There are no private motorised vehicles allowed which creates a serene atmosphere. Visitors and residents get around with the help of an excellent public transport system, or by golf cart or bicycle. The town is accessible by bus, ferry or taxi (to DB North Plaza only).

There are green spaces everywhere in DB which makes the town ideal for those who love the outdoors. The beach is wide and is the perfect place to relax by the water. There is an excellent 27-hole golf course, private club houses and marina, plus many more outdoor activities for children and adults alike. Hong Kong Disneyland is just 2km away. Hong Kong is known to most as a bustling hub of activity. Discovery Bay provides an oasis of calm and natural beauty for those who wish to escape the traffic and crowds.

HIKES IN THE AREA

Discovery Bay is ideally located for hiking enthusiasts. The town sits at the foot of the majestic Tiger’s Head, separating the town from the north of the island. There are plenty of trails to follow from Discovery Bay – some tougher than others. Here are our suggestions for routes you might like to explore.

DISTANCE: 6.3KM DURATION: APPROXIMATELY 2.5 HOURS

A good hike for beginners, the trail from Nim Shue Wan to Mui Wo is steep in places, but not as severe as Tiger’s Head. The path is also mostly paved, making it well-suited to families with little ones. Although not buggy-friendly (there are a lot of steps at the end), the path is, for the most part, scooter-friendly, which helps keep the kids’ enthusiasm going!

To find the trail, start at DB Plaza and head towards the Kai To pier near Discovery Bay marina. Just after you turn off the main road, you will see the path to Nim Shue Wan on your right. Follow the path, with the beach on your left. As you pass through the village you will start to climb up the hill. At the top of the hill you will find Grandpa’s Garden, an organic farm that sells a range of seasonal vegetables.

Follow the path and continue through the village. At one point, it will look like you are walking through someone’s house, however it is actually still a public path.

After passing through the village, head uphill, following signs for the Trappist Monastery. You will know you are heading in the right direction when you start to see the 12 stations of the cross on the trees at the side of the path. The monastery itself is a very peaceful place, and is well worth a stop.

Leaving the monastery, continue uphill until you reach the Chinese Pagoda – the top of your climb. After that it’s all downhill. This is where the steps come in – and lots of them! The steps bring you out at the far end of Silvermine Bay beach. There, you can rest your weary legs on the sand before you continue on to Mui Wo, around a 15-minute walk along the beach.

DURATION: APPROXIMATELY 3.5 hours

Tiger’s Head, or Lo Fu Tau, provides a stunning backdrop to Discovery Bay and is a hiker’s dream. There are a number starting places for this hike, at various points along Discovery Bay Road. From the north end, you can start behind Greenvale Village/ Neo Horizon. Although steep in places, this is one of the easier routes to the top.
A little further down the road, opposite SKH Wei Lun Primary School, is a set of steps that heads uphill via the Discovery Bay lookout point, a nice place to stop and take in the incredible view over the town.
Or, for those who like a challenge, start at the bottom of Discovery Valley Road, which leads up towards Discovery Bay Golf Club. Follow the road as it winds uphill until you come to a path heading off towards the lookout point on the right. After a couple of minutes, you will see a path heading through the grass on your left. This can be rather overgrown at times, but it soon becomes clearer as you ascend. This route to the top is a tough one, and you wil need to use your hands to climb in places.
At 465 metres high, the Tigers Head summit offers incredible 360 degree views of Hong Kong, from the airport and New Territories in the north , to Hong Kong island and the outlying islands in the south and west.
Once you’re done taking in the view, continue west towards Mui Wo. The trail gets much easier from here, as it’s all downhill. The scenery changes as you go, from open plains to wooded areas and views of Discovery Bay Golf Club.
After a few kilometres, you will reach the Olympic trail. Take a right onto the trail and follow the path towards Tin Lun. From here, take a right and then a left towards Tai Ho. The scenery along this section is lush and tropical.
Eventually you will arrive at Pak Mong village, where there is a public toilet. From the village, head left and continue along the path until you come to the the water at Tai Ho Wan, alongside Cheung Tung Road.
From here you have a few options. Option one is to stay on the footpath at the side of the road all the way to Tung Chung. Option 2 is to use the underpass to head under the North Lantau Highway, and walk alongside the sea. At the end of the path, make your way through the Carribean Coast high-rise development and take the footpath to the Citygate Outlets shopping mall.
The third option is to turn left before the car park off Cheung Tung Road and climb up the “Olympic Green” steps. The path leads over babbling brooks and boulders, so this route is best avoided after heavy rain.
